16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. On offer is a simply sensational group of three [3] original hand drawn art books and handwritten letters by noted artist Christian B. Newswanger [also Xtian Newswanger] created and compiled during the artist's service in the Merchant Marine during World War II. He served aboard numerous vessels including the "Sabine Sun", The "S.S. Virginian" and the "Albion Victory". The work is a very eclectic offering with a unique perspective of seaman activities and marine duties from this talented artist. Much of the work is divided between pencil sketches and pastels. One book, SS Virginian Fall of '45, has a lot of loose pages but is full artwork and letters; one book, Sabine Sun Dec 1945 includes some tucked in letters to his father, and a retrospective memoir of how he started at sea at the age of 17 as a ship's purser, is about a quarter filled and the last, SS Virginian '45 Poland - Sweden, has about 15 pages filled.
